Lesson 31
يَخْتَتِمُ الْكِتَابُ بِهَذَا الدَّرْسِ الَّذِي يُعَرِّفُ بِالنَّعْتِ (الصِّفَةِ) وَالْمَنْعُوتِ (الْمَوْصُوفِ)، وَيُوَضِّحُ الْأُمُورَ الَّتِي يَتْبَعُ فِيهَا النَّعْتُ الْمَنْعُوتَ (الْإِعْرَابُ، التَّذْكِيرُ وَالتَّأْنِيثُ، الْإِفْرَادُ وَالتَّثْنِيَةُ وَالْجَمْعُ، التَّعْرِيفُ وَالتَّنْكِيرُ).
The book concludes with this lesson defining the adjective (النَّعْتُ/الصِّفَةُ) and the described noun (الْمَنْعُوتُ/الْمَوْصُوفُ), and explaining the aspects in which the adjective follows the noun it describes (case, gender, number, definiteness).
النَّعْتُ: هُوَ الَّذِي يُبَيِّنُ صِفَةً مِنْ صِفَاتِ الْمَنْعُوتِ. النَّعْتُ يُسَمَّى: صِفَةً، وَالْمَنْعُوتُ يُسَمَّى: مَوْصُوفًا.
The adjective (naʿt or ṣifah) is what describes an attribute of the noun it modifies (manʿūt or mawṣūf).
يَتْبَعُ النَّعْتُ الْمَنْعُوتَ فِي: ١- الْإِعْرَابِ (الرَّفْعِ، النَّصْبِ، الْجَرِّ). ٢- التَّذْكِيرِ وَالتَّأْنِيثِ. ٣- الْإِفْرَادِ وَالتَّثْنِيَةِ وَالْجَمْعِ (مُلَاحَظَةٌ: جَمْعُ غَيْرِ الْعَاقِلِ يُعَامَلُ مُعَامَلَةَ الْمُفْرَدِ الْمُؤَنَّثِ). ٤- التَّعْرِيفِ وَالتَّنْكِيرِ.
The adjective follows the noun it describes in four aspects: 1. Case (nominative, accusative, genitive). 2. Gender (masculine, feminine). 3. Number (singular, dual, plural - Note: non-human plurals are often treated as feminine singular for agreement). 4. Definiteness (definite, indefinite).
هَذَا كِتَابٌ جَدِيدٌ (نَكِرَةٌ، مُفْرَدٌ، مُذَكَّرٌ، مَرْفُوعٌ). قَرَأْتُ الْكِتَابَ الْجَدِيدَ (مَعْرِفَةٌ، مُفْرَدٌ، مُذَكَّرٌ، مَنْصُوبٌ). هَذِهِ كُتُبٌ جَدِيدَةٌ (جَمْعُ غَيْرِ الْعَاقِلِ + صِفَةٌ مُفْرَدَةٌ مُؤَنَّثَةٌ).
Examples: "This is a new book" (indefinite, singular, masculine, nominative agreement). "I read the new book" (definite, singular, masculine, accusative agreement). "These are new books" (non-human plural noun + singular feminine adjective).
